Blog post 7: Changes to my study programme - Architecture

Hello everyone!

In this blog, I will be talking about what changes could be made to my study programme.

Firstly, it's relevant to mention that I'm currently studying architecture, which similarly to design or geography, implies a constant mixture between theory and practice. The last ones being in many cases not totally productive since, most of the times, the hours taken to classes and study time are much more than the hours proposed in the first place. This issue has been more evident with the current online system. Requiring to be sited in our laptops the entire day and, as a consequence, limiting the performance that one could have in each subject and the necessary commitment to the contents.

In addition, an important aspect I think the University owes to the students, is the stance in regards to the technological changes in the use of computer programs. In this sense, each teacher has a different methodology, in which the use of programs is more or less required. This, sometimes affects the performance one can have while studying a course and delivering assignments, and regardless of the amount of expertise you have in a certain area, if you are not prepared to represent your ideas, this could translate in a quite frustrating experience.

For example, in the faculty, it is actually necessary the use of Adobe programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, In Design, etc) in order to build an academic language and the creation of drawings, schemes, diagrams,  and graphics to name just a few, which are quite related to a visual kind of approach. However, the University doesn't have the licenses of these programs, not to mention that it doesn't offer inductions or training courses with the aim of having the basis on how these operate along the career years.

Personally, I think I have the enough capacity to digest new programs in an autonomous way, but this isn't the reality of the majority of people. Having situations like, for instance, group dynamics where  some, take the role of those who really know the programs, whereas others, take a limited part in the creation process, and thus, impoverishing their own learning experience.

To sum up, I think it's very important to learn about the online experience we have had in order to optimise and respect the time we spend in classes. As far as technology is concerned, it is evident the necessity for the University to step forward in giving the programs the recognition and protagonism they deserve in the career, without looking at them as things that depend entirely on students. Everyone should have the same knowledge.

That was the blog!

What do you think about this topic? I would like to read your opinions,

Bye!

  1. I love the first picture haha! And I agree with you. The university should have the licenses for the programs it ask for.
